FOUNDATIONS

Getting Started & Skill Levels

1

I am an adult complete beginner.
Can I really start from scratch?

Yes, absolutely. Over 70% of our students are adults, many of whom have never touched a keyboard before. Our curriculum skips childish nursery rhymes and dry drills, focusing immediately on practical chord theory, ergonomic hand technique, and songs you genuinely enjoy listening to.

2

I used to play years ago and want to return.
Where do we begin?

Returning players are one of our core specialties. During your initial discovery conversation, Bryant identifies your existing strengths and flags any old mechanical habits or gaps in music theory. From there, we design a customized roadmap to get your fingers moving freely and restore your musical confidence quickly.

3

What actually happens during the free discovery call?

The discovery call is a relaxed, 1-on-1 conversation over Zoom or phone. Bryant listens to your musical aspirations, discusses past roadblocks or plateaus, and learns about your schedule and instrument. Together, you will outline a clear roadmap to ensure the coaching program is the right fit before committing.

TECH & SETUP

Virtual Studio & Equipment

1

What keyboard or piano do I need to get started?

Any acoustic piano or an 88-key digital keyboard with weighted or semi-weighted keys is ideal. A standard sustain pedal is also recommended. You do not need expensive recording gear, professional microphones, or audio interfaces to begin.

2

How do I set up my camera for Zoom lessons?

Setup is simple. You only need a smartphone, tablet, or laptop positioned to the side of your keyboard so Bryant can see your hands, wrists, and the keys clearly. Bryant provides multi-angle overhead views from his studio so you can clearly see every finger placement.

3

Can online piano lessons truly match in-person instruction?

Yes, and many adult students find virtual coaching far superior. Using high-definition video and Zoom's original sound mode, Bryant hears your dynamic touch and corrects physical tension in real time. You learn on your own home instrument in your natural practice environment, without wasting time commuting.

THE METHOD

Curriculum, Musical Styles & Learning

1

What musical styles and genres do you teach?

Bryant coaches a wide variety of genres including jazz, classical, gospel and church worship, blues, pop, and contemporary ballads. Because lessons are 1-on-1, your curriculum is customized around the specific artists, genres, and songs you love.

2

Will I learn to read sheet music or play by ear?

You learn both. Bryant teaches you how to read notation fluently while simultaneously training your ear and understanding chord structures. This balanced approach allows you to read pieces with ease while also having the freedom to play and improvise others without sheet music.

3

How is 1-on-1 coaching different from YouTube tutorials or apps?

Apps and pre-recorded videos show you which keys to press, but they cannot tell you why your wrists feel tight, why a chord transition feels awkward, or how to fix poor practice habits. 1-on-1 mentorship gives you personalized mechanical adjustments, real-time accountability, and a coherent step-by-step roadmap tailored specifically to your hands.

SCHEDULE & COMMITMENT

Practice Expectations & Time Zones

1

How much daily practice is expected?

We emphasize focused micro-practice: 20 to 30 minutes a day, 4 to 5 days per week. Consistent, mindful practice using Bryant's clear weekly checklist produces far better results than exhausting multi-hour weekend cram sessions.

2

How does scheduling work across different time zones?

Durham Music Academy actively teaches students across the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, and Australia. We offer flexible daytime, evening, and weekend time slots designed to comfortably accommodate busy professionals and international time differences.

3

What happens if I have a busy week or need to reschedule?

We understand that work and family schedules fluctuate. With reasonable advance notice, you can easily reschedule your session to another open time slot so your learning momentum stays on track.

ACCOUNTABILITY

Feedback, Progress & Communication

1

Do I receive notes or assignments after each lesson?

Yes. After every coaching session, you receive a concise, personalized practice checklist. You will always know exactly what to practice, what tempo to aim for, and what technical milestones to focus on during your home sessions.

2

Can I ask questions between scheduled lessons?

Yes. Students have direct access to message Bryant between lessons. If you get stuck on a tricky chord voicing or want quick feedback on a 30-second practice clip, you can send it over to keep moving forward without waiting for your next session.
